Somalia's Prime-minister, Omar Abdirashid
Ali Sharmake |
Djibouti, February 14, 2009 (SL Times) –
Reports from Djibouti indicate that Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, the
son of Somalia’s last civilian president was chosen as Somalia’s prime
minister. This does not come as a surprise since news of Omar
Sharmarke’s likely appointment has been circulating for days. He has
lived in Canada and worked for the UN. Aside from the fact that he is
the son of a former president, he is new to politics does not have a
power base. But given that he hails from Somalia’s North East region
(Puntland), it may give him some influence there. His appointment is
unlikely to contribute to finding a solution to Mogadisho’s thorny
problems.
