Mogadishu,
Somalia, February 18, 2009 – A former Somali general and top military
expert General Mohamed Nur Galaal has advised the leadership of the
Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia to revive the former
national security forces so that they can be able to stabilize the
war-ravaged nation.
Talking to reporters in Nairobi on Wednesday the former general accused
the TFG of using clan militias as military and police forces instead of
working to give security to civilians.
“The security situation in the country is deteriorating and those who
are worsening it are the so called police and military (the clan
militias) who have been given army uniforms and weapons” General Mohamed
Nur Galaal added.
He called on President Sheikh Sharif to recall the former security
forces who he believes will be able to train the young militia men and
tighten the country’s security situation.
“My advice to the president is to ask the former members of military,
police and security services to come to work and I am very sure that
they will help his government to suddenly restore security and defend it
from collapsing” he stated.
He said that governments formed during the last 18 years failed to
stabilize the country because of neglecting the priority of former
members of the army who have more skills in securing the lawless nation.
“We know the break away Republic of Somaliland is much safer than
southern Somalia and that is because former military and police men are
working and the impolite clan militias were disarmed,” he said.
The recently formed internationally-backed national unity government is
the latest of 15 failed attempts to look for a lasting peace and
functioning government for Somalia which has been in chaos amid bloody
clan clashes since the 1991 downfall of former military rule of Mohamed
Siyad Barre.
