Portraying Alshabaab as the new formidable enemy |

Issue 372
|
First, in order to convince the public the danger that a foreign organization poses to the U.S., preconditioning must be done. And as part of mentally preparing the American people for the potential attacks, the F.B.I has been investigating dozens of Somali young men from the States who allegedly travelled to Somalia and joined Alshabaab. Second, no sooner the investigation began, than U.S. portrayed Alshabaab as a dangerous group to America. Third, now the public is convinced the disappeared young men will come back to U.S. to carry out terrorist acts. Bingo! Fear has been instilled into the hearts and minds of the American people. The public is fed with the usual dose. The game is on. And conveniently, the public was not informed that not every Somali who fought against the Ethiopian occupation was a member of Alshabaab group. In other words, thousands of Somalis who had nothing to do with Alshabaab or I.C.U battled the Ethiopian invaders. That is an indisputable fact. Then, how can we confirm that the young men who went back to Somali joined Alshabaab? Moreover, what many people may not know is: although Al-Qaida is a terrorist organization, the U.S. uses this group as a tool to continue its imperial expansion in the Middle East and Central Asia. And today, another violent organization—Alshabaab is most likely to become yet another indispensible tool for America in order to dominate Africa and edge out China as a competitor in the region. Soon setting off staged terrorist attacks in the U.S. and blaming them on Alshabaab will became a new reality. Unfortunately, Somali-American communities will pay heavy price. They will be closely scrutinized and regrettably alienated. Already some mosques are receiving e-mail threats. When emotions are running high just as the Japanese-Americans were considered the enemy “within” during WWII, today Somali-Americans may be viewed as the “sleeping cells”. Called it an isolated incident or whatever you want, but the ignorant American who mistook a Sikh man clearly wearing a turban for a Muslim and shot him dead, would not spare a Somali person standing in front of a Mosque. http://www.law.harvard.edu/students/saturday_school/article_101101.shtml
