Hargeysa, March 24, 2009 — Mr. Hussein Ali Duale, Somaliland’s minister of finance, was grilled today by the legislators of Somaliland’s Parliament about the government’s new budget and the escalating inflation following the printing of new money by the administration. Mr. Duale denied knowledge of any money the government has printed and urged the Parliamentarians to question the Chairman of Somaliland’s Central Bank about any such money.

  Some of the Somalis displaced from Mogadishu: Thousands in Hargeisa say they would like to return home but they lack the means to do so

HARGEYSA, March 26, 2009 – At least 15,000 Somalis, who had fled to Somaliland to escape violence in Mogadishu, want to return home following the recent change of government but lack the means to do so, aid workers said.
Moreover, the circumstances of the estimated 2,500 families are complicated by the fact that Somaliland authorities consider them refugees while aid agencies consider them internally displaced.

Hargeysa, Somaliland, March 20, 2009 — A court in Hargeysa, the capital of Somaliland, sentenced Mohamed Abdi Guled, the editor of the Hargeysa-based weekly Yool, to five months in prison on 17 March on charges of operating an unregistered newspaper and publishing fabricated information.

A deadly explosion in the Puntland provincal capital of Garowe city in Somalia injured an Oromo-Ethiopian woman and killed one Somali national.
According to the local media Garowe Online, the blast occurred at a restaurant and police said the restaurant owner is under investigation in relation to the explosion.

Somaliland House of Elder (Guurti)

Hargeysa, Somaliland, March 26, 2009 – Some members of the unelected House of Elders, the Guurti, are proposing yet another extension for the unelected president of Somaliland.
The group whose number is fewer than a third of the 82-member body, has tabled a bill to extend Riyale’s presidency by another six months. If the chamber approves the bill, it will give Riyale grounds to justify his stay in power without being elected.
