Hargeysa, March 25, 2009 - A number of students demonstrated in Erigavo yesterday where a number of people were injured and some properties were damaged. The demonstration started after the Minister of Education visited the city to observe the educational situation in the region.
The students said they are demonstrating against lack of proper educational materials, mismanagement and that of the ministry which neglected the region’s schools as well as the education in general.
The demonstration started in a peaceful way then turned out to be a violent where some government officials were injured. The regional education deputy director was among the injured and rushed to Hargeysa for treatment. Some government vehicles were also said to be damaged during the demonstration.
There demonstrators then broke up into two groups, one supporting the administration and others against it which caused more violence between the two groups. The police intervened and arrested a number of them to restore the order in the city.
There is no official statement from the government regarding the incident.
