Hargeysa, April 01, 2009 – The two opposition parties in
Somaliland, Kulmiye and UCID, have rejected the new date set
for elections by the house of elders of Somaliland, Guurti.
Mr Faysal Warabe, Chairman of UCID decried that the Guurti
does not have the authority to set the election time table
while Mr Silanyo altogether rejected both the time table set
by the Guurti and the extension made to Rayale’s term of
office by the Guurti.

an American promotes holy war in Somalia in a video posted
this week on an Islamic militant Web site.
A U.S. government contractor who tracks extremist propaganda
says the footage is the first to show what may be an
American with a senior role in al-Shabab, a Somali group the
State Department considers a terrorist organization with
links to al-Qaida.

Deporting Asylum Seekers Contradicts Law and
Government’s Statements
Nairobi, April 3, 2009 – Kenya should immediately stop
deporting Somali asylum seekers, including women and
children, back to their war-torn country, Human Rights Watch
said today. The group said that Kenya should recognize all
Somalis who qualify as refugees with rights to protection in
Kenya.

Four journalists who traveled to Somaliland for a media seminar have been
detained by local police, Radio Garowe reports.
The four journalists traveled by air to Hargeysa, the
capital of Somaliland, after leaving their homes in Garowe
and Galkayo, two cities in the self-governing Somali region
of Puntland.
The journalists were detained at Hargeisa's Egal
International Airport on Wednesday, where they were
questioned by police.

fishermen repair fishing nets in the southern coastal
NAIROBI, 2
April 2009 (IRIN) - Somalia has revoked fishing licences for
foreign vessels and is planning a new law to regulate
fishing in its waters, a minister told IRIN on 2 April.
The move follows complaints by local fishermen of lost
livelihoods because they lacked modern equipment and the
means to replace old nets, and were being forced out by
foreign-owned vessels.

()- General Ban Ki-moon today welcomed the $1.1 trillion package
committed by leaders of the Group of 20 (G-20) nations in
London, stressing that developing nations must receive the funds
needed to stem the onset of a human development crisis.
