Nairobi/Hargeysa, April 11, 2009 (SL Times) – A number of donor nations and international organizations that support Somaliland’s democracy and presidential election have issued a press release this week in which they called for dialogue between Somaliland’s political parties as the only way out of the current political crisis.
The countries and organizations that issued the press release were: USAID, DfID (UK), EC, Norway, SIDA (Sweden) and Denmark.
In their brief press release, the donor countries and organizations warned that the current political disputes, if not handled through discussion and dialogue, may derail Somaliland from its democratic course.
Below is a press release issued by Democratization Programme Steering Committee:
“The donors supporting the Somaliland democratization programme have followed with deep concern recent developments, which gravely undermine the achievements of the post-1991 consensus.
The donors are assessing the implications of these developments for their continued support for the democratization programme in Somaliland.
The donors insist that there is no alternative to dialogue among the parties in the present circumstances, and call urgently on the political leadership to show restraint, maturity and respect for the democratic aspirations of the people.”
