Hargeysa, Somaliland, April 25, 2009 (SL Times) – An election mediation committee has issued a press release in which it said that it will bring together the heads of Somaliland’s three political parties (President Dahir Riyale Kahin, Mr Ahmad Sillanyo and Faysal Ali Warabe) in a face-to-face meeting today. The purpose of the meeting is to find a solution for the political disputes between the government and the opposition. The committee said it took the initiative to mediate between the opposing parties in order to help Somaliland navigate through the political problems on the way to a peaceful and fair election. Towards this end, the committee has requested both the government and the opposition to refrain from media attacks against each other. It has also asked the private media to refrain from publishing material that will hurt the country and chances of holding a successful election.
Although the mediation committee was formed based on their own initiative, they said they had gotten a green light from the contending parties to go ahead with their mediation.
The members of the committee are:
Aadan Baxnaan Xirsi, chairman
Jaamac Axmed Maxamed, speaker
Xuseen Cali Nuur, member
Dr. Aadan Yuusuf Abokor, member
Sheekh Ismaaciil Cabdi Hurre, member
Aadan Xirsi Suge, member
Cabdulqaadir Cali Xasan, member
