Berbera,
Somaliland, May 2, 2009 (SL Times) – A court in the city of Berbera,
Somaliland, sentenced two pirates to twenty years in jail each. The two
pirates were part of a nine member gang who were caught about 80 km off
the coast of Berbera. Each of the remaining seven pirates was sentenced
to 15 years in jail.
The pirates admitted in court that they were engaged in piracy, and the
reason two of them received longer sentences was because they were the
leaders.
This is the fourth time since 2008 that pirates are apprehended, tried
and jailed by Somaliland.
