Berbera, Somaliland,
May 9, 2009 (SL Times) – Deputy Director of Berbera Port, Bile Hirsi Id,
denied that a ship destined to Somaliland was hijacked in the Indian
Ocean.
Mr Bile Hirsi Id was responding to news accounts in Somaliland's media
that said a ship carrying merchandise destined to Somaliland was
hijacked in the Indian Ocean.
While talking to the media, Bile Hirsi Id said, "We know all the ships
that are headed to Berbera and what time they are supposed to arrive,
and contrary to the claim by Cable TV, there is no ship that was
destined to Berbera which was hijacked by pirates. Moreover, the agent
of that ship here does not have the information circulated in the media;
therefore, the news that was announced in the media about a ship that
was coming to Somaliland being hijacked is false."
If the deputy director’s claim is true, it would mean that
Somaliland-bound ships continue to arrive safely despite the surge in
piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
