Hargeysa,
Somaliland, May 16, 2009 (SL Times) – Security was tightened in
Somaliland's capital Hargeysa with armed forces patrolling the streets
and preventing car access to the main road that passes in front of the
presidential palace, a practice which residents of the capital are
familiar with in the evenings but that happened this week in daytime.
Somaliland's police has not revealed the reason behind the heightened
security in the capital, but credible sources report that security
forces have taken into custody several terrorism suspects.
Since last October's coordinated multiple suicide attacks in Hargeysa,
the issue of combating terrorism has taken greater importance in
Somaliland.
There is agreement among Somaliland's government, opposition parties and
ordinary citizens that Somalia's chaos and terrorism should not be
exported to Somaliland.
