Berbera, Somaliland, May 23, 2009 (SL Times) – A World Food Program ship carrying 23,900 metric tons of food for Ethiopia, docked in Berbera earlier this week. As reported by Haatuf correspondent in Berbera, Mr. Ahmed Adan Dheere, the ship was escorted by NATO naval forces until a distance of 1 km away from the Berbera port.
We tried to get some information from the officials in charge of the ship but they said they were too busy. However, the manager of Berbera Port, Eng. Ali Omar Muhammad confirmed that the shipment is going to Ethiopia, and is part of a planned overall shipment of 250,000 metric tons that is supposed to go to Ethiopia.
Asked how long it would it take to unload the shipment, the port manager said, “it will take about two weeks, if transportation is adequate.”
Eng. Ali Omar Muhammad added that this is a good opportunity for the country, and that Somalilanders, particularly the communities through which the vehicles transporting the food are going to pass through, should make sure that the vehicles pass them safely.
The arrival of the shipment has created a buzz of activity in Berbera with transportation vehicles owners arriving from various parts of the country.
About four companies will transport the shipment to Ethiopia.
