Hargeysa, Somaliland, June 6,
2009 (SL Times) – Somaliland’s parliament had a heated debate about the
agenda for its 9th session. Some of the ideas that came up in the
discussion included setting up a committee for investigating
government-owned houses that were sold, foreign affairs, Upper House
election law, government employees salaries law, and road safety law.
The debate was chaired by parliament’s 1st Deputy Chairman, Mr Abdiaziz
Muhammad Samale.
There is public dissatisfaction with the performance of Somaliland’s
parliament. In an interview with Haatuf, the Chairman of Parliament, Mr
Abdirahman Muhammad Abdillahi (irro), was asked about the fact that many
of the laws passed by parliament are languishing in the president’s
office and have not been disseminated to the public. Mr Irro’s answer
was that the president is legally required to set up a legal office that
disseminates the laws among the public, and while the president is
organizing that legal office, he should send the laws that were passed
by parliament to the high court.
