London,
UK, June 13, 2009 (SL Times) – Mustafe Abdi Gamute, a Somalilander who
lobbies for Somaliland’s independence in Britain had an opportunity to
ask Britain’s Foreign Minister, Mr. David Miliband, why his government
has not yet recognized Somaliland, even though Somaliland has been
peaceful and democratic for eighteen years, something that many
countries in the world do not have?
David Miliband answered that his government is aware of the situation in
Somaliland, that Britain supports Somaliland’s democracy, that his
government will wait until African countries recognize Somaliland then
follow their lead, that his government is looking forward to
Somaliland’s coming election and that he hopes it will be fair and free.
