Hargeysa, Somaliland, June 20, 2009 (SL Times) – The first secretary of the French Embassy in Djibouti, Mr. Thierry Choinier, paid a three day visit to Somaliland this week. Speaking to the press at Egal International airport, on his way out of the country, Mr. Thierry Choinier praised Somaliland’s democracy and its continuous gaining of strength. He revealed that the French government will send international monitors to Somaliland’s presidential election, scheduled to take place Sept.27, 2009. He also stressed that Somaliland’s democracy will be evaluated by how the election is conducted.
According to Mr. Thierry Choinier, the reason for his visit to Somaliland was in order to get first hand information about the situation in the country, and to strengthen relations between France and Somaliland. While in Somaliland, the first secretary took a trip to Berbera port where he met with the management of the port, Somaliland’s maritime security forces as well as businessmen.
Mr. Thierry Choinier met with Somaliland Vice President Ahmad Yusuf Yasin. Somaliland’s representative in France, Mr. Mohamud Salah Nur (Fagadhe) was at the airport for Mr. Thierry Choinier’s departure ceremony.
