Borama, Somaliland, June 27, 2009 (SL Times) – Somaliland and Somalia water management officials met in Borama this week. The meeting was attended by 40 managers of water resources from Somaliland and Somalia. The purpose of the meeting was how to efficiently manage and conserve water resources. In his inaugural address to the meeting, the Governor of Awdal region, Mr Mohamud Sheikh Abdillahi Ige said, “the aim of this meeting is for representatives from Somaliland, Puntland and Somalia, to exchange information regarding water management.”
Mr Mohamud Sheikh Abdillahi Ige stressed that water is a requisite for human life and people should have access to it in a just and fair manner that is devoid of political considerations.
Several speakers thanked Borama water company (SHABA) for arranging the conference which was financed by UNICEF.
Among the participants in the conference were water management officials from Baydhabo, Bosaso, Gaalkayo, Baladweyn, Gebilay, Berbera, Garowe and Borama.
Reports indicate that invitations were extended to water managers in Kismayo, Jawhar and Marka but the Islamic extremists in charge of those places prevented them from attending the conference.
