Hargeysa,
Somaliland, June 27, 2009 (SL Times) – A delegation from the British
embassy in Addis Ababa arrived in Hargeysa on June 24th. The delegation
said their main objective in coming to Somaliland is to get a more clear
picture of how preparations for the presidential election are
proceeding.
The British delegation met with the heads of Somaliland’s three
political parties: UCID, KULMIYE and UDUB.
No official statements were released on the substance of the talks. But
informed sources have confirmed that they mainly discussed issues that
have to do with how to ensure that a fair and free presidential election
takes place on schedule.
Somaliland and Britain have historic relations, and Britain is keenly
interested in developments in Somaliland. Britain is also one of the
largest financial contributors towards democratization and elections in
Somaliland.
