Hargeysa,
Somaliland, July 4, 2009 (SL Times) – The British ambassador to
Ethiopia, Mr Norman Link said that in his two days talks with
Somaliland’s government and the opposition he sensed progress has been
made in preparations for Somaliland’s presidential election that is due
in September 27. The ambassador said this at Egal International Airport
just before his departure from Somaliland.
Speaking about the reason for his visit, ambassador Link said, “This is
my third visit, and I have been here for two days. I have met with the
president, ministers and the political parties and we talked about the
preparations for the election that is supposed to take place in
September 27. The purpose of the meetings was so that I could have
private conversations with various officials. I believe progress has
been made and that we will see even more progress in the coming days. I
also have confidence in the process that is underway for the election to
take place on the 27th of September.”
Addressing the differences among Somaliland’s political parties ,
Ambassador Link said, “I have met with representatives of the three
political parties, and there were small political differences, but it is
important to know that Somaliland’s election should not be delayed for
the fourth time because that will not be good for Somaliland’s
reputation. I also know that none of the parties wants to be the cause
behind the delay. Neither does any of parties want to harm the future of
Somaliland. I think they all agree on that now and are going to meet in
order to get their positions closer.”
Mr Norman Link spent two days in Somaliland.
