Hargeysa, Somaliland, July 4, 2009 (SL Times) – Fifteen students
graduated from the University of Hargeysa's Medical School this week.
This is the first group of medical doctors that graduated from the
University of Hargeysa. A ceremony in honor of the new graduates took
place at Mansoor Hotel. The event was attended by University of Hargeysa
students, Somaliland Medical Association members, Kings College
representatives, national and international health organizations,
various national institutions and other distinguished guests.
Addressing the graduating students, the President of the University of
Hargeysa, Dr Hussein Bulhan said, “I say thanks to the new doctors. Our
country which was once known for training people on how to shoot guns is
now producing medical doctors. I advise the 15 new doctors to work for
their country and I promise that we will send them abroad to continue
their education.”
The Vice President of Hargeysa University, Mubaarik Ibraahim Aar, also
addressed the students and warned the new class about leaving the
country now that they have graduated.
Explaining the educational process that the medical doctors went
through, the head of Hargeysa's medical school, Dr Diriye Ismail said,
“The 15 students were the ones who were kept out of the 140 students
that the program started with, and they have displayed excellent
character. I also thank the World Health Organization (WHO) for its
continued support.”
The event was also addressed by the President of Somaliland’s Medical
Association, Dr Ahmed Gas, Edna Adan Ismail, and a representative of
Kings College.
The examinations of Hargeysa University’s Medical School are
administered by the
London based Kings College which has a program of assisting both the
University of Hargeysa and Amoud University.
Two of the fifteen new doctors are females.
