Hargeysa,
Somaliland, July 4, 2009 (SL Times) – In a letter written in Somali and
published in Haatuf, Mr Abdi M.Saleiman (Mingiste) pleaded with
Somaliland’s people not to forget their artists, especially the singer
Faysal Omar Mushteeg. Mr Mingiste said he does not know Faysal Omar
Mushteeg’s current situation but every time he hears the name Faysal
Omar Mushteeg, he remembers his songs which were sung across the
Somali-speaking world.
Mr Mingiste cited one of his favorite songs “Lacageey” (Money) in which
the singer bemoans how money has become the measure of a man’s worth.
Some of the lyrics of the song are:
“LACAGEEEEEEEEEEEEY-
RAGGA KALA LABEEYAAY.
LIITAHA GARGAARAY
LAQAN HOOS U CELIYAAY
TAAN ANIGU KU LOOFARAY
EEN HORE U LUMIYAAY.”
“Oh money
you that creates distinctions between men
that sides with those of poor character
that humiliates the proud
that I easily spent
and squandered a while back.”
In conclusion, Mr Mingiste conveyed to all Somaliland and Somali artists
his best wishes and stressed that the artists should not be forgotten.
