Hargeysa, Somaliland, July 11, 2009 (SL Times) – Ahmed Muhammad Haji Dahir was sacked from his position of membership in the election commission. Parliament was acting on the recommendation of parliament’s subcommittee on internal affairs, which in turn was acting on a circular from President Dahir Rayale Kahin. The subcommittee also recommended that a committee should be set up to investigate the disputes and allegations of corruption in the election commission.
Parliament’s sacking of Ahmed Muhammad Haji Dahir resulted in a split in the ranks of the opposition parties.
The 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Abdiaziz Muhammad Samaale who chaired the session took a strong stand against some parliamentarians opposed to the motion to strip Mr. Ahmed Muhammad Haji Dahir of his membership in the election commission.
The recommendation to expel Ahmed Muhammad Haji Dahir was presented by Siciid Cilmi Rooble, the Chairman of Parliament’s Subcommittee for Internal Affairs.
