Hargeysa, Somaliland, July 18,
2009 (SL Times) – Officials from Somaliland ministry of education
appeared before parliament’s Community Affairs Subcommittee on July 9,
2009. The purpose of the hearing was to get a briefing on the current
situation of education in the country and the ministry’s education
policy.
The minister of education, Mr Hasan H. Mahamud (Hasan-gadhweyne) gave a
long report about the current situation of education and his ministry’s
“education policy”. The minister stressed that the ministry’s activities
are far and wide and cover the entire country. The minister said that
although there are some problems in education, overall, the condition of
education is positive. He pointed out the various entities that
contribute to education and the progress that was made thus far.
Other ministry officials who also participated in the hearing were the
General Director of the Ministry of Education, Mr Ahmed Abdi Odawa, as
well as directors of several sections of the ministry of education.
The hearing was led by the Chairman of Parliament’s Community Affairs
Subcommittee, Mr Ahmed Abdi Kijandhe. It was a lively exchange of views
between the education ministry officials and the Community Affairs
Subcommittee, and in the end, it was agreed that more meetings should be
held between the two sides for more in-depth exchange of views.
