Somaliland: Elections “Tola-Ayey Style”

Hargeysa, Somaliland, July 25, 2009 (SL Times) – Somaliland Forum, a Somaliland advocacy organization held a meeting in Hargeysa’s Mansoor hotel this week. The object of the meeting was to identify the obstacles that have stood in the way of Somaliland’s recognition for the last 18 years and to formulate ways in which to overcome those obstacles.
Among those who addressed the meeting was Somaliland’s Speaker of Parliament, Mr Abdirahman Muhammad Abdillahi (Irro) said Somaliland has met all the conditions for gaining diplomatic recognition and the international community can attest to the fact that Somaliland has established through its own efforts a system of government that is rare in Africa, therefore, Somaliland should be recognized. He also added that Somaliland’s parliament has established links with their counterparts in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Britain, and some of these parliamentarians were invited to Somaliland Recognition Conference.
Dr Hussein Bulhan, the President of Hargeysa University spoke about the connection between recognition and education.
Dr Sad spoke about recognition and economics. Ali Dool suggested that Somalilanders should take their case to the World Court in the Hague.
The Chairman of Somaliland Forum, Eng. Abdillahi Dahir also addressed the meeting.
Somaliland Forum is organizing a larger conference on Somaliland recognition in October and this meeting is paving the way for that event.
