Hargeysa, Somaliland, August 8, 2009 (SL Times) – Somaliland’s ruling party, UDUB, kicked off its election campaign on Tuesday (Aug.4th). UBUB supporters led by Vice president Ahmed Yusuf Yasin and several party officials and government ministers gathered at Freedom Park in Hargeysa. Speaker after speaker repeated the correctness of the decision to hold the presidential election without voter registration. They blamed the opposition for being obstructionist and standing in the way of the election. Some of the speakers, especially, UDUB party’s spokesman, Ali Muhammad Yusuf (Ali Guray), leveled harsh criticism against INTERPEACE for failing to prepare a credible voter registration on time for the election. Among the officials present were the Minister of Public Works, Said Sulub Muhammad, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdillahi Muhammad Duale, the Secretary General of UDUB, Mr Jama Yasin Farah, UDUB campaign manager, Osman Abdillahi (Hindi).
UDUB officials and supporters also held an election rally in Borama. Among the participants were the Mayor of Borama, Mr. Abdirahman Shide Bile, and members of parliament including Muhammad Jama Abgal, Muhammad Abdi Hashi Hamari and Adan Haji. An election campaign gathering of UDUB also took place in Berbera and was addressed by the Chairman of UDUB in Sahil Region, Mr Muhammad Omar.
The two opposition parties have not started their election campaign. They said they will not participate in an election without a voter registration list.
