Mogadishu,
Somalia, August 15, 2009 (SL Times) – Mogadishu’s weapons prices
suddenly saw a marked rise due to an influx of weapons. Some of these
weapons were types that were not available before. Mogadishu’s arms
merchants have revealed that the weapons were part of the military aid
that the US gave to Sheikh Sharif’s weak government, and that the
weapons were subsequently sold to Somali merchants by Sheikh Sharif’s
ill-disciplined militias.
Arms merchants attribute the increase in weapons prices in Mogadishu to
the expectation of new battles to flare up. According to Dayniile.com
website, the rise in prices was particularly noticed in Mogadishu’s
biggest arms market Cirtoogte.
A few months ago, the US provided 40 tons of military to Somalia’s
nominal government. Earlier this week, Secretary of State Clinton said
the US is going to increase military aid to Somalia.
