Hargeysa,
Somaliland, August 15, 2009 (SL Times) – On Aug. 11, Somaliland
parliament passed a four-point motion which stated:
1) The National Election Commission’s decision which suspended the voter
registration list and ordered that elections should be held without
voter registration is illegal.
2) President Dahir Rayale Kahin and the National Election Commission
should quickly withdraw their suspension of the voter registration list.
3) Parliament will take constitutional steps against the president and
the Election Commission if they fail to fulfill the parliament’s motion.
4) Somaliland’s government should refrain from taking actions that will
either damage Somaliland’s chances of getting diplomatic recognition or
hurt the limited aid that Somaliland receives.
Somaliland government immediately reacted to the parliamentary motion by
rejecting it as unconstitutional.
