Hargeysa University Graduation Ceremony Draws Somaliland Politicians Closer

Hargeysa, Somaliland, August 22, 2009 (SL Times) – Hargeysa University celebrated the graduation of 340 students from the departments of business, economic, law, science and technology, IT, health, journalism and Islamic studies. Parents, students, intellectuals, parliamentarians, politicians and other distinguished guests were present.
The President of the University of Hargeysa, Dr Hussein Bulhan congratulated the students who are up to now the largest batch of students to graduate from the University of Hargeysa in the same academic year.
In addition to academic celebration, the occasion also brought together many of Somaliland’s top political leaders most of whom spoke in a constructive spirit which eased some of the tensions that have been building up due to disputes over the coming presidential election. Vice president Ahmed Yusuf Yasin highlighted this positive spirit by saying, “we and the opposition have common interests and are headed in the same direction, and if you see the opposition making a lot of noise, don’t be surprised, because they are like thirsty camels whom we [the government] have been blocking from access to the drinking well”. He also emphasized that the issues dividing the government and the opposition would be resolved once the blessed month of Ramadan starts and “the devil is tied in chains”.
Kulmiye’s first Vice chairman, Muse Bihi spoke in the same uplifting spirit as the vice president. He said that the opposition parties are ready to resolve the standing issues through reasoning and persuasion. He emphasized that the focus of the opposition parties is on defending Somaliland from its external enemies and not stirring trouble inside the country. To support his argument, he cited his response to the recent meeting of Somali war criminals in Washington.
Likewise, UCID’s Chairman, Eng. Faysal Ali Warabe said that the political problems in Somaliland shall be resolved. But he also emphasized that the laws must be respected. “It is the government’s duty to unify the people whether they pro-government or opposition supporters.”
