Hargeysa, Somaliland, August 29, 2009 (SL Times) – A conference to strengthen relations between Wales and Somaliland was held in Somaliland’s capital, Hargeysa, on Aug.24, 2009. The conference was organized by Abdikarim Adan and other leaders of Somaliland’s community in Wales. It was attended by officials from the ministry of resettlement, the ministry of health, local NGOs, international organizations, Edna Adan (Somaliland’s former foreign minister), and other distinguished guests.
Mr Abdikarim Adan discussed a project that the Somaliland diaspora had been working on for some time whose objective is to deepen the ties between Somaliland and Wales. He summarized what they had achieved so far, the obstacles they faced, and their plan for the future. He said it is part of their plan to identify skilled Somalilanders who live in Wales and send them to work in Somaliland as volunteers.
The participants were split into several groups and were assigned to come up with a list of the fields where skilled volunteers are needed the most.
The Minister of Resettlement, Mr. Maxamed Yusuf Cismaan, praised Somaliland’s diaspora, particularly, the one in Wales, for their contributions to the progress of their country of origin. Likewise, Somaliland’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edna Adan Ismail, praised and thanked the Wales diaspora for their diligent efforts towards helping Somaliland.
