Hargeysa, Somaliland, September 12, 2009 (SL Times) – Somaliland’s Upper House succeeded in resolving the problem between the parliamentary majority and the government. This was announced by the Chairman of Somaliland’s Upper House, Mr Suleiman Mohamoud Adan in an interview with the BBC Somali service (Sept.11, 2009).
The gist of the agreement is that the government would immediately withdraw the police that had taken over the parliament’s building and would allow parliament to conduct the people’s business. On their part, the leaders of parliament agreed to cancel their call for citizens to come out in large numbers and help them enter parliament, if need be by force.
A delegation of Somaliland sultans also helped in brokering the agreement.
Mr Suleiman Mohamoud Adan’s announcement brought a sigh of relief to many Somalilanders both inside and outside the country who were concerned about the government’s assault on parliament, one of Somaliland’s major symbols of democracy and the prospect of violence.
