Somaliland Government Instigates Violence To Derail President’s Impeachment |

Hargeysa, Somaliland, September 12, 2009 (SL Times) – On Tuesday, Sept.8, an ugly scene unfolded in Somaliland’s parliament. Shouting matches between some members of parliament turned into a fist-fight and one parliamentarian from the ruling UDUB party, Abdirahman Mohamed Jama (Xoog) even drew a gun. The meeting was to consider two motions, one about impeaching President Dahir Rayale Kahin and the other one about changing the parliament’s rules. After parliament’s legal counsel said that impeachment could proceed, the government’s supporters began yelling and creating chaos. Police then moved in, and took over the parliament building. The president’s supporters in parliament have backed the police’s takeover of parliament, and their spokesman, Hussein Ismail Yusuf, even admitted that they had told the government to close parliament. Statements by several government ministers and government supporters in parliament clearly show that they have been working together to instigate violence in parliament, then to use that as an excuse for closing the parliament and its takeover by the government. The government is doing this because parliament is considering an impeachment motion against President Dahir Rayale Kahin and the majority of parliament seem in favor of impeaching the president.
