Somaliland "Official" Says President Sharif Brought Al-Qa'idah To Somalia

Hargeysa, Somaliland, September 19, 2009 – A senior official of the self-proclaimed republic of Somaliland, who has declined to be named, has accused the president of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia [TFG], Shaykh Sharif Shaykh Ahmad, of bringing senior members of Al-Qa'idah to southern and central regions of Somalia during his days as the chairman of the Union of Islamic Courts [UIC].
The official said that President's Sharif is not serious about fighting terrorists because he supports Al-Qa'idah. He stated that TFG is just seeking means to obtain finance from the international community when urging the world to help it in the fight against terrorism.
The Somaliland official also stated that some TFG ministers have links with Al-Shabaab Islamic Movement and Al-Qa'idah, however, he declined to mention them. He stressed the release of French national follows talks between some TFG officials and Al-Shabaab.
On the other hand, the official accused President Sharif of recruiting his personal militia on the operations against piracy along the Somali coast, saying that majority of the TFG's coastguards hail from his sub-clan.
The statement by the Somaliland official follows US air strike that killed senior member of Al-Qa'idah, Saleh Ali Nabhan and other members of Al-Shabaab in Baraawe District, southern Somalia.
