No one can defend what occurred in Somaliland today, and it appears that
matters are getting out of hand. But, where there is hope, there is
always opportunity.
I have often lauded Somaliland’s winning formula of dialogue, discussion
and consensus, and will always continue to do so. Those who expect
Somalilanders to abandon their nation and sovereignty at the first sign
of difficulties are truly mistaken.
It pains me greatly to see the loss of life in the Holy month of
Ramadan. What happened in Hargeysa today cannot be excused. Those
responsible must be held accountable.
Now, it is time for Somalilanders all political persuasion to come
together. It is time to put the well-being of the nation and its
citizens above petty partisan politics. It is time for national
leadership. It is time for the sons and daughters of Somaliland to
safeguard the nation.
Lest, we forget thousands upon thousands gave their lives for this
nation. Their legacy shouldn’t be sullied by repeating the same
conditions that drove the people of Somaliland to rise up against the
tyranny of the old and defunct union.
Somalilanders must not give comfort to their foes.
Somaliland will survive this crisis. That is a certainty. Whether
Somaliland can regain its good name, restore its dignity and honor is in
the hands its citizens.
Somalilanders need to reconcile, regroup and rededicate themselves to
their nation. Each and every single Somalilander has a role to play in
the success of the nation.
Somalilanders must remain strong and vigilant.
