Hargeysa,
Somaliland, September 26, 2009 (SL Times) – Somaliland’s Upper House
voted for endorsing the 6-point agreement between Somaliland’s political
parties that was proposed by the international community. In order not
to create a political vacuum in the country, the Upper House also added
a stipulation that the president’s current term ends a month after the
election. Seventy eight members of the Upper House attended the session,
and 77 of them voted in favor of the motion. The three parties as well
as Somaliland’s public saw the vote as a wise decision and heartily
welcomed it.
There was a big concern among a large segment of Somaliland’s public
that the Upper House would blindly vote for extending the president’s
term, and security was tight around the Upper House, with crowds not too
far. But when members of the Upper House came out and announced what
happened, the mood turned to that of joy and cheer.
The vote has defused the escalating crisis in Somaliland. This is a good
day for both the Upper House and Somaliland.
