Hargeysa,
Somaliland, September 26, 2009 (SL Times) – Although using bumper
stickers and other signs on automobiles is pretty common in many
countries around the world, this was an unknown phenomenon in Somaliland
until last week that is, when Ali Adan Muhammad, a Somalilander from the
diaspora posted on his vehicle a message which urged Somaliland’s Upper
House not to extend President Dahir Rayale Kahin’s term.
Mr Ali Adan Muhammad stuck the message to the rear window of his car
about a month ago. He had not faced any problems until the day before
the Eid celebration when he was stopped by police, but the police had to
let him go after many passersby intervened and said he had a right to
put that message on his car.
Explaining why he did it, Ali Adan Muhammad said Somalilanders should
protect their rights to freely express their opinion, and should not
allow their country to become like Djibouti, Eritrea or Libya where
there is no freedom of expression.
