Somaliland Political Parties Sign Agreement

Hargeysa, Somaliland, October 3, 2009 (SL Times) – The heads of Somaliland’s three political parties signed the 6-point agreement that they had agreed to earlier in the week. The agreement was signed by the President of Somaliland, Dahir Rayale Kahin, the Chairman of Kulmiye Party, Ahmed Silanyo, and the Chairman of UCID, Faysal Ali Warabe. The signing ceremony was also attended by the British Deputy ambassador to Ethiopia, Mr John Marshal, the Director of the Ethiopian Foreign Minister’s Office, Mr Mulugete Zowda, the head of the Ethiopian Trade Office in Somaliland, Ambassador Wubeshet Demissiemb, the Chairman of the Upper House, Mr Suleiman Mohamud Adam, the Chairman of Parliament Abdirahman Muhammad Abdillahi (Irro), and other Somaliland political leaders.
President Dahir Rayale Kahin called the agreement “a new beginning.” Both the government and the opposition leaders expressed appreciation to all of those individuals and organizations, both domestic and foreign who made the agreement possible. They stressed that Somalilanders have a long tradition of solving their political problems through their own efforts, and this time was a rare exception when they needed the assistance of their foreign friends to solve internal problems. They also made it clear that as much as they value the help of their foreign friends, still, Somalilanders will henceforth go back to their tradition of resolving their own political problems by themselves.
The signing ceremony was held at the presidential palace.
