Sultan Guray Nur Passes Away

Borama, Somaliland, October 10, 2009 (SL Times) – Sultan Muhumed Nur Geelle (Sultan Guray) passed away in Borama on Wednesday after a long illness. Sultan Muhumed Nur Geelle was a member of Somaliland’s Upper House, and was also the overall Sultan of the Jibril Yonis subclan to which President Dahir Rayale Kahin belongs.
In his long life, Sultan Guray has experienced most of Somaliland’s modern history, from the colonial era and independence to the trauma of the union and finally the restoration of Somaliland’s sovereignty. He has also held a variety of positions and worked all over Somaliland, including Odweyne, Hargeysa, Borama, and Gabiley. He has also played a major role in bringing about the reconciliation of Somaliland’s communities. He was thought to be over 110 years old when he passed away.
The Somaliland Times sends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and to all Somalilanders.
