The Conditions Of A Democracy

Friends Of Somaliland Democracy Pledge Support

Nairobi, Kenya, October 10, 2009 (SL Times) – Countries that support Somaliland’s democracy which include USA, UK, EC, Norway, Sweden and Denmark have pledged to continue their support for Somaliland’s democratization. They said their support will be based on the 6-point agreement that was signed by Somaliland’s government and the opposition parties. The countries that support Somaliland’s democratization promised to send experts to work with Somaliland’s soon to be formed election commission.

Below is a statement released on October 5, 2009 by the Somaliland Democratization Programme Steering Committee in Nairobi, Kenya:

Democratization Programme Steering Committee (USAID, DFID (UK), EC, Norway, Sweden, Demark)

The donors compromising the Somaliland Democratization Programme Steering Committee (USA, UK, EC, Norway, Sweden and Demark) have taken note of the agreement between the three political parties on the upcoming Presidential Elections, which was signed last week in Hargeysa.

We stand ready to continue supporting the Somaliland election process, and in line with the agreement, to deploy experts once changes to the National Electoral Commission are made and the implementation of the agreement commences.

We look forward to working with a newly reconstituted National Electoral Commission to support the delivery of free and fair elections in Somaliland
