Four Members Of The New Election Commission Announced |
||
|
Hargeysa, Somaliland, October 10, 2009 (SL Times) – Some of the prospective members of the new commission were announced separately this week. The Upper House nominated Hassan Said (a well-known journalist) and Sharif Mahmud from eastern Sanag. Kulmiye chose Ilhan Muhammad Jama who is, so far, the only female member to be nominated for the commission. UCID stuck with its former member of the electoral commission, Mr Khadar Muhammad Guuleed. Asked why they did not forward a new member, the Chairman of UCID, Faysal Ali Warabe insisted that their member was for all practical purposes a new nominee since he had replaced the previous nominee not that long ago. The only members who have not yet been nominated are the three individuals whom the president is supposed to nominate. Other than Hassan Said, a veteran journalist, and Khadar Muhammad Guleed who had already been confirmed once by parliament, the qualifications of the other two members have not been offered for public scrutiny. The selection is only the beginning of the process and does not guarantee success in becoming a member of the election commission.
