LOCAL & REGIONAL AFFAIRS

Addis Ababa, October 17, 2009 – French company Bollore Africa Logistics is to invest €500-million in the Somali port of Berbera, a crucial lifeline for landlocked Ethiopia, a diplomat said Wednesday.
Berbera, less than 300 kilometers east of the former French colony of Djibouti, faces Yemen on the Gulf of Aden and is the economic capital of Somaliland, a breakaway state more stable than the rest of Somalia.

"Bollore is about to invest €500-million in Berbera port to improve the port and create a new corridor to the hinterland.
Ethiopia is very excited about that," a French diplomat based in Addis Ababa said.

"The project is not completely finalized, but Bollore has a huge presence in West Africa and is interested in East Africa," the diplomat said on condition of anonymity.

Lessons For Somaliland From Kenya's Post-Election Violence

Role Of The Media In Somaliland Elections - New Report Published

Dr. Nicole Stremlau is Co-ordinator of the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy and a Research Fellow in the Centre of Socio-Legal Studies

report examining the role of the media in the upcoming Somaliland elections in the light of lessons learned from Kenya, has been published in September 2009.

The report explores issues of media policy during post-election violence. We examine the case of Kenya, where 1,133 people were killed after the 2007 elections, to distill lessons for Somaliland’s upcoming elections. There are indications the elections in Somaliland will be highly contentious and that the media will have an important role in either exacerbating or alleviating political violence.

The intended audience for this report is journalists and policymakers in Somaliland as well as concerned international observers. We also expect that the issues drawn out here will be relevant for other countries in the region that are grappling with upcoming elections that have the potential of being highly contentious.

Somaliland Caught Between The President’s Lawlessness And The Opposition’s Poor Judgment

Let us say from the outset that the president’s holding back of the submission of the opposition’s nominees to the electoral commission is illegal and is an abuse of power. It is the many illegal actions like these that have put a majority of parliament on the verge of impeaching him. Let us also not forget that the impeachment motion was only suspended and could be brought back if he continues to violate the 6-point agreement. Having said this, it also clear that the opposition have not helped their cause and have played right into the hands of the president. How so? First of all, it is a widely known fact that the president is a serial violator of the law and has ritually intervened in the legal process and subverted its neutrality to the point that none of his political opponents are willing to have the matters under dispute be resolved by those whose job it is to resolve such disputes, namely, the judicial authorities.

Is Irish Independent News Outlet Spreading Islam-Phobia And Racism?‏

Dear Irish Independent editors,

Although I greatly enjoyed reading your article entitled, “Christianity must become more like Islam to prosper “published on Monday, October 12, 2009, I was equally saddened and offended that that article continued spreading deliberate disinformation about Islam. And the ironic thing is: it is this shameful and deliberate disinformation—a condoned racism—towards Islam and Muslims that in fact brought Islam to your doorsteps, in the first place. See the article:
