RDF To Help 70 Potential Employees In Finding Jobs

Hargeysa, Somaliland, October 31, 2009 (SL Times) – The non-governmental organization RDF inaugurated a training program for seventy high school and university graduates.
The program will go on for three months and at the end of the training period, RDF will help in finding jobs for those who successfully finish the program. The training will be given by foreign teachers and is part of a program called Shaqo-doon (job-search) which connects job-seekers and employers and is funded by EDC.
The official start of the program was attended by students who will participate in the training, teachers who will give the training, EDC officials and representatives from the ministry of education. The Executive Director of RDF, Mr Jimale Muhumed Farah spoke at this event and said that the purpose of RDF is to contribute to the development of the community and to engage in research. “the aim of this program is to find jobs for the youth so that the long time they spent in acquiring education would not be wasted,” Jimale Muhumed Farah added.
Mr Jimale Muhumed Farah pointed out that an important part of what they teach students is how not to lose patience if they do not find a job quickly. He warned against truancy, urged students to attend classes regularly at the end of which they will be given certificates, and promised to keep in touch with students after the program is over.
Other speakers included Muhammad Muse Dhama, Abdiqadir Suleiman Hashi and Daud Ahmed Farah.
The head of EDC project, Muhammad Muse Dhama said that, initially, they intended to take 63 students but because of the big demand, they increased the number of trainees to seventy.
Abdiqadir Suleiman Hashi (a representative of EDC) advised the trainees to engage in creative thinking and to read more extensively because reading expands one’s horizons.
The Chairman of Somaliland Examinations, Mr Daud Ahmed Farah said he is very much concerned about the increasing number of students who are graduating from Somaliland’s schools and universities and who are being thrown into the employment market at a time when previous graduates are still unemployed. “This is the best program I have seen” that deals with the problem of unemployment, added Daud Ahmed Farah.
He also spoke strongly against illegal emigration (tahriib) by Somaliland’s youth and said it is caused by lack of patience and the solution is for the youth to strengthen their religious beliefs.
Daud Ahmed Farah suggested that employment should be based on performance in exams.
