Ottawa,
October 31, 2009 — The radicalization of Somali Canadian youth could
become a potential threat to national security, RCMP Commissioner
William Elliott said Friday.
In a speech to an Ottawa conference of security and intelligence
experts, Elliott said the insurgency in Somalia has attracted young
American Somalis to the terrorist cause and there are concerns Canadian
youth could follow.
Elliott’s speech touched on several other threats to national security,
including the resurgence of core Al-Qaeda, Lebanon-based Hezbollah and
the Tamil Tigers. He also suggested that Canadians trafficking heroin
from Afghanistan, a major source of funds for the Taliban, could face
terrorism financing charges under the Anti-terrorism Act.
Referring to recent terrorist arrests and convictions, he said, “those
successes, however, need to be seen as confirmation of the reality and
severity of the threats we face."
