Somaliland Women Demand Their Rights

Hargeysa, Somaliland, October 31, 2009 (SL Times) – In a BBC Somali Service program that was broadcast Oct.23, 2009, several Somaliland women discussed the problems that women face in Somaliland society particularly in the political arena.
Among the women interviewed were Fadumo Said, Shukri Haji Bandaro, Zamzam Abdi Adan and other women leaders.
The women pointed out how after almost two decades of Somaliland independence, women are still not anywhere close to getting their rights. They agreed that the president’s rejection of the only one that was nominated to the electoral commission was a big let down and showed insensitivity to the political disenfranchisement of women. They asked why men insist that women stay at home and not be involved in politics while at the same time men have no problem buying the narcotic qat from women who spend almost all day outside their home.
The program ended with very touching poems by Nimo Adan.
