Muna Asayr Jama Draws Attention To The Plight Of Homeless Children

Hargeysa, Somaliland, October 31, 2009 (SL Times) – Muna Asayr Jama, a journalist with SLSC TV and Radio Horyal wrote an article for the Somali newspaper Haatuf in which she bemoaned the terrible situation of Somaliland’s homeless children. She pointed out how most societies pay special attention to their children the same way they pay attention to fresh flowers because those societies know that today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders. However, neither Somaliland’s people nor Somaliland’s government are paying attention to the needs and situation of children, she asserted.
Muna Asayr Jama divided the problem of children into three categories:
1. The few who come from well-to-do families and therefore get good education and live well.
2. Those who come from middle income families and do not get good education and whose life is a struggle.
3. The majority who barely get enough to eat let alone getting good education.
The author of the article also drew attention to the problem of homeless children. She warned that although in the past homeless children used to be exclusively male, there are now female homeless children.
Muna Asayr Jama concluded her article by urging Somaliland society, government ministries, and non governmental organizations to do something about the situation of homeless children before it is too late.
