How The IOG Weathers The Political Storm Of The Neighboring Somaliland?

The Siren- A Modern Somali Short Story-Part 2

By: Yassin Ismail

Leila and Khalid were soon married. Leila played the part of the young bride perfectly. She was radiant that evening and the sadness conveyed by her dark lovely eyes gave her a certain elegance that one could not help but admire. In fact, everyone in attendance could not help but admire her, everyone that is but her husband. Khalid was completely obviously to his new wife. It would have made no difference if a statue was seated beside him. He had lost his heart a long time ago, and now he had no love to give to his young bride. He was as indifferent to her as he was to the color of the table cloths.

Khalid’s parents however adored their new daughter in-law and it wasn’t long before the whole family learned to love the sweet tempered Leila. Even Khalid, whose heart was not as unfeeling as he had initially assumed, had eventually grow to like her. Her easy going disposition and kind and considerate nature resulted in a friendship forming between them. It wasn’t long before he came to relay on her. Khalid’s career also began to improve shortly after his marriage. Leila had provided the encouragement he needed to succeed in his career and it wasn’t long before he secured a promotion. With the promotion came a bigger home and better life in general. Things it seemed were finally looking up for Khalid again, and he was beginning to feel content with his new life, but it wasn’t long before disaster came looking for him in the form of Ubah.

Ubah had grown unhappy in her marriage and it seemed that during its brief duration she had come to the realization that she had chosen the wrong man to marry. Khalid’s recent financial success only seemed to reaffirm this, and it wasn’t long before she decided she wanted him back. Of course, she had heard of his recent marriage and it did not deter her at all. She knew his heart too well. She knew he stilled loved her, and his marriage was just a poor attempt to forget her. His young wife was no challenge for her.
