Written by David Fiocco
As part of my travel reading on last month's Horn of Africa
expedition, I purchased Mark Bradbury's Becoming Somaliland. At
least in Uganda's book stores, this appears to be the best
comprehensive overview of the new breakaway republic. It is a
part of the excellent "African Issues" series, which includes
some of my other favorite books on the continent (Paul
Richards's Fighting for the Rainforest: War, Youth & Resources
in Sierra Leone and Alex DeWaal's Famine Crimes: Politics & the
Disaster Relief Industry in Africaare both must-reads). The book
was published in 2008, but Bradbury's fieldwork seems to have
ended in about 2006, already making the book a bit dated in this
volatile region of the country.

Somalia is entering an era of spate in suicide bombings only
seen only in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan that is carried

blast that killed at least three Ministers, one critically
injured and injured scores of others that reached fifty
people including young promising graduating students at
Banadir University, doctors, professors, parents,
journalists and ordinary people at Hotel Shaamo in Mogadishu
is an indicative of the seriousness of the situation in
Somalia and the way international terrorists and their hosts

Assessing Somalia’s Terror
Threat |
|
Despite increased efforts of young members of the Somali
diaspora to fight at home, it is unlikely that Somalia will
turn into a large-scale training ground for jihadists,
unless it becomes a major hotspot for confrontation against
the West, Georg-Sebastian Holzer writes for ISN Security
Watch.
By Georg-Sebastian Holzer for ISN Security Watch
Recent activities by US citizens of Somali decent are
setting new records in the US security arena. Last weeks’ unveiling
of terrorism-related charges against 14 US nationals who
allegedly helped 20 young Americans to join the Somali
al-Shabaab movement is the largest group of Americans
suspected of joining an extremist movement affiliated with
al-Qaida since 9/11.
