New York, December 5, 2009 (SL Times) – Most Somalis as well as foreigners who are knowledgeable about the Somali situation do not take Sheikh Sharif’s government seriously because they know this so-called government does not control more than a couple of square blocks in Mogadishu, and that it is a government in name only. Now, because of its own corruption and mismanagement, Sheikh Sharif’s government is losing even its few supporters. One such case of mismanagement is the appointment of Omar Jamal to a diplomatic post at the UN. Omar Jamal is a school drop-out who was convicted of immigration fraud by a US court. The appointment has raised eyebrows among Somalis in the US, since even Abdillahi Yusuf who shares clan affiliation with Jamal Omar had to back off from appointing him. However, the latest news (Voice of America’s Somali Service, Dec.3, 2009) says that Omar Jamal’s appointment was rejected by the US embassy at the UN because he did not meet the conditions to be a diplomat at the UN. Idd Beddel, another so-called Somali diplomat at the UN has confirmed the rejection of Omar Jamal and blamed Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Mr. Jangali, for the appointment. Omar Jamal was convicted in 2005 by a US court for immigration fraud and is pending deportation. For more information, click here:
