Egyptian Ambassador Arrives In Somaliland

Hargeysa, Somaliland, December 12, 2009 (SL Times) – Mr. Muhammad Said Mursi, the Egyptian Ambassador to Somalia who is actually based in Nairobi, Kenya, and whose brief also covers Somaliland, arrived in Somaliland this week. The Egyptian ambassador met with President Dahir Rayale Kahin, the minister of foreign affairs, the minister of health and the minister of interior. He also met with officials from the ministries of education and fisheries. The two sides discussed how to reinvigorate relations between the two countries in a variety of fields including security, health, education, and fisheries.
The Minister of Interior, Abdillahi Ismail Ali (Irro), discussed with the Egyptian ambassador the issue of piracy and requested from him that the Egyptian government should play a bigger role in helping Somaliland deal with piracy. The ambassador promised to convey the Somaliland government’s request to the Egyptian government. The minister of interior was accompanied by officers from Somaliland’s coast guards.
The Minister of Health, Abdi Haybe discussed with the Egyptian ambassador how Egypt can assist Somaliland in the health field, particularly in training health staff and providing medicine.
In an interview with the Somali language newspaper Haatuf, Ambassador Mursi said he was happy with the cordial reception he received in Somaliland. He also added that it takes time to improve relations but stressed that his visit will contribute towards better relations between Egypt and Somaliland.
