Abdirahman Nur Ahmed Draws Attention To Problem Of Garbage And Congestion In Hargeysa’s Streets

Hargeysa, Somaliland, December 19, 2009 (SL Times) – In an article for the Somali language newspaper Haatuf, Abdirahman Nur Ahmed (Hiiraan) drew attention to the worsening problem of huge amounts of garbage strewn in Hargeysa’s streets.
Abdirahman Nur Ahmed touched on the traffic congestion that the vehicles transporting food aid from Berbera to Ethiopia had created in Hargeysa. He also blamed much of this problem on bus conductors and their assistants who do not park their vehicles in specific areas marked for parking but instead park in vital city streets thus blocking traffic. Abdirahman Nur Ahmed added that bus drivers/owners do engine work in unauthorized areas and soil the streets with engine oil and even take the liberty to piss in back streets.
Ahmed Yusuf Ali, a Hargeysa resident told Abdirahman Nur Ahmed, that in stead of doing something about this terrible situation, the local government is making things worse through its corrupt practice of selling vital street junctures and important spots to businessmen.
Abdirahman Nur Ahmed concluded by pointing to the lack of awareness raising programs about these issues by both the city administration and the government controlled media, and how the only time we hear about them is when vehicle accidents happen.
