Al-Shabaab Beheads Two Men; Hizb Al-Islam Stones A Man To Death And Whips A Woman

Mogadishu, Somalia, December 19, 2009 (SL Times) – Two young men were slaughtered with a knife and cut into pieces by al-Shabaab in the Karan neighborhood of Mogadishu.
Haji Muhudin Haji Afrah, the uncle of one of the victims said his nephew was on his way home when he was taken away by armed men then murdered. Haji Muhudin Haji Afrah added that because of the 20 year civil war, no one is surprised these days if someone is killed in Mogadishu, but to be slaughtered adds a whole new frightening dimension. In an interview with the Voice of America’s Somali Service (Dec.16, 2009), he called what al-Shabaab is doing a new form of colonialism imposed by foreigners and urged the people to get rid of them.
As if not to be outdone by al-Shabaab when it comes to cruelty, Hizb al-Islam stoned a man to death in Afgoye, 30 km south of Mogadishu, after accusing him of having had sex with a woman to whom he was not married. The woman was spared from the stoning and was given 100 lashes in public because she had never been married. Hizb al-Islam also executed a man who was accused of murder by shooting him. Many of the recipients of these barbaric sentences are members of minority clans in south Somalia.
