U.S. Calls For Immediate Release Of VOA Reporter In Puntland

Nairobi, Kenya, December 26, 2009 – The United States government is concerned about the state of freedom of the press in the Somali region of Puntland. The December 21 arrest of a Voice of America (VOA) Somali Service reporter highlights the difficult conditions in which journalists practice their trade in Puntland. We call for the immediate release of the VOA reporter. Furthermore, we call on the regional government of Puntland to exhibit full respect for media practitioners and their right to freedom of the press.
